Madeleine K. Albright
by Bewildering Stories
Our readers will have surely noted by now tributes to the late Madeleine K. Albright, the first female U.S. Secretary of State. Appointed to the office by President Clinton, she was awarded the Medal of Freedom by President Obama for her outstanding public service.
Why should Bewildering Stories take note? The connection is admittedly coincidental, but it’s too prominent to let pass unremarked. Ms. Albright’s family immigrated to the U.S. in time to escape the Holocaust, and her knowledge of eastern European languages served her well in her diplomatic career.
One may reasonably surmise that her status as an immigrant led her to appreciate the meaning of the “long title” of one of the works in our collection Cassandra’s Voices: Warnings to the Modern Age. Her “jacket blurb” is quite accurate and well deserves its place under the title on the front cover:
“Combines a historian’s mastery of substance with a born storyteller’s
sense of style to create a magnificent work of art.”
