Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
David Wayne Stewart
Formerly a political officer at the Canadian consulate in Palo Alto, California, D. W. Stewart is presently chair of the Canadian Studies Advisory Board at the University of California at Berkeley and works in establishing connections between Bay Area technological firms and their counterparts in Canada.
“Unlocking the Oath” will appeal even to readers who don’t travel abroad. The essay takes a very personal and sometimes wryly humorous look at ways in which nationality can affect relationships in both the official realm and ordinary life.
We’re all too well aware that the “globalization” promoted by the development of mass communications has proved to be a blessing as mixed as most human motivations seem to be. Here we can enjoy an essay that is both realistic and humane.
And if you ask whether Canadians are really this nice, your Managing Editor can say that, on the whole, yes, the essay does fairly represent them. Now that pandemic restrictions have been loosened, you may want to come and visit. And some visitors have come and stayed. Just don’t re-enact the stereotype joke of Americans showing up at the border on the July 4th holiday all bundled in winter clothing and carrying snow skis atop their car.
