Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Rado Dyne
Rado has been an avid outdoorsman in his many years of living in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. He describes himself as an “engineer by profession and a writer by passion.”
“Taking Joy for a Spin” is a six-chapter serial that is complete on line in two consecutive issues as of the first instalment.
The story is, technically, a “space opera” and is quite an unusual example of the genre. The characters of the story comprise a team of miners in the “mountains” of an asteroid belt around Proxima Centauri.
Thus set in a medium-distant future, the story allows some innovations. In technology, the space miners move not by a form of jet propulsion but by a kind of “harness” that uses gravity. They can move in tethered pairs over significant distances on asteroids by taking alternating leaps as “Tarzan” and “Jane.”
The miners’ group is unusual, too; it’s mixed with men and women. “Joy” is both the name and title of an engineer who is also the official counselor and, apparently, an as-needed sex partner of the mining crew. Both occupations suddenly become crucial when a disaster strikes the expedition.
