A Bedtime Story

by Anna Ruiz

Life is designed by tips and balances,
awkward intrusions
and things that generally go bump in the night.
Anything but complacency
will awaken the nearly dead from righteous slumber,
even the colour red,
but blue will be the colour life chooses.
Green will be the valley between snowcapped mountains,
mountain sheep and dancing goats.
Water will stream from a giant’s eyes,
forming lakes of reflections and ice.
A wolf will howl at the moon,
and a dog will curl at your feet.
You will hear the train whistle
before boarding
the last passage home.
