Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Kenneth Hill
Ken is from southern California but moved to Canada, where he has worked as a private investigator, a short-order cook and an Air Force medic. He has also earned a Ph.D. in Psychology and served as a professor teaching cognition and forensic science. He has published poetry extensively as well as many non-fiction books and articles about search and rescue operations. If you’re ever lost in the wilderness, give Ken a call; he’s your man.
“Dangerous Fission” will impress veteran readers as a new concept: a single character acts out two different stories simultaneously. It’s not a matter of coventional time-travel, where one goes back and starts over; rather, “cornfield boy” decides to go space-exploring and stay at home on the farm all at the same time.
The result is a split destiny where the boy suffers loss whatever he chooses. The ambitious wish proves accidentally fatal; the prudent decision proves long-lived but disappointing. The two stories could reverse fate and exchange their conclusions; a rattlesnake in the cornfield might suffice. And it’s clear what loss the space-traveler might feel.
