Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Kris Faatz
We heed Kris’s cautionary note that her name, despite appearances, rhymes with “skates.” Or, one might say, in view of her story in this issue, it’s also a homophone of “fates.”
Kris lives with her family in the vicinity of Baltimore, Maryland. She is a fan of fantasy and magical realism, genres that she has had considerable success in adapting to her own short stories and novels.
“Ranger” doesn’t activate BwS’ one-word title allergy, because it’s a proper name. It was originally the name of an airplane but is bestowed by the pilot’s sister, Helen, upon a tiny dragon who pops into existence in response to her grief at the loss of her brother.
Readers will find the magic not only reassuring but somewhat humorous, because Ranger doesn’t know why he’s with Helen and needs time to find out what he’s supposed to do. Helen, for her part, is surprised by Ranger’s sudden appearance, but she realizes very soon that she also has to take care of her magical companion.
