Matthew Hughes

Over the decades, Matthew has published fantasy, space opera and crime fiction voluminously in Britain, Canada, and the U.S. In recent years. he has self-published novels and anthologies. He has won or been short-listed for innumerable literary prizes and has been inducted into the Canadian Science Fiction and Fantasy Association’s Hall of Fame.

“Bearing Up,” first published in 1995, is a story intended for young adults. The title may ruffle readers who are allergic to puns. However, taken figuratively, the title summarizes the moral lessons the story communicates to young people who may have doubts or fears about their present or future place in the world. All readers should, of course, retain a healthily cautious view of bears.
