Adriana Alarco de Zadra

Our already sizable South American contingent gains a new member; this time, from Peru. Adriana’s literary achievements are very respectable indeed: poetry, short stories, children’s literature, travel guides, books and collaborations, and more than a decade of prize-winning dramas. She has been published widely in both South America and Europe, and two of her plays appear in a U.S. anthology for a reading program in Spanish.

Adriana’s non-fiction articles have dealt with Peru’s natural resources, including medicinal plants. She also works as a professional translator in English and Italian; as a volunteer, she has been making available medical literature on the treatment of pandemic diseases such as AIDS.

Her first appearance in Bewildering Stories, “The Blue Balloons” is her own translation of her story “Los Globos Azules.” We are sure that readers will respond to the story’s gentle charm: it displays great sensitivity to a couple’s feelings and aspirations, their bewilderment at memory loss, and the indestructible quality of their love. And yet the story remains realistic and honest, never yielding to the temptation of sentimentality.
