Quilt of Deception
by Carmen Ruggero
And in the dark, they lay heavy with guilt;
regretting the choice they’d made long ago
when falsehood, piece by piece had built their quilt
and now more lies they thread to hide their woe.
In that starry space lovers seem to know,
they whispered sweet lies, their passion waving;
the flame, the flame consuming hot and slow
for it was flesh not love they were craving.
And all too well they knew they were paving
their way to regret, for the day they’d met
was Cupid’s day off; their lust not worth saving
and yet they married, each feeling in debt.
Still they lay on their lonely bed each night
threading on their quilt the words: it was right.
