Beautiful Smoker
by Thomas White
She sexily lights a cigarette,
A delightfully ordinary
Promethean event,
The hubris of a small pleasure
Affronting mortality; lustfully
She inhales, her hand bearing
Its erotic little sparkler,
Swooping down, wing-like, in
A gorgeous motion, sweeping
In its ashy aftermath a gown
Of silky, satin smoke.
Is she an angel on the brink
Of flight, ascending to a heaven
Where a cigarette never goes out?
