Bertil creates a new Challenge question for “The Dream Machine,” in issue 282.

How will Dr. Strauss react to the pleading letter? That is an open question I, the reader, will continue to think of after reading the story.

An excellent question, Bertil. The figure of Dr. Strauss is not exactly enigmatic: we gather that he’s well intentioned; however, he’s not as knowledgeable as he thinks he is, and he does not appear to be wholly scrupulous with his test subjects. Since he also appears to be something of an enthusiast, he may be open to hubris.

And hubris leads to incaution: the “dream machine” may fall into the hands of someone who would like to have ready-made inventions that are harmful; hence the fear that the “monster” might return.
