The Scent of You

by Carmen Ruggero

Summer time, fire orange, yellow roses,
hot sun burning on the sidewalks;
ice-cream, sprinklers, children running,
the sound of laughter filled the evening
and I remember you...

...weaving the colors of summer
into the autumn landscape,
you were there,
bagging leaves and burying bulbs,
brewing coffee, baking biscuits.

You were there...
merging the hues of each season
one into the next: red to yellow,
to evergreens laden with snow.

You were there...
weaving our winter days right into spring
when tiger lilies and yellow roses loom,
when the scent of you is in the air
and the robin sings his love song,
I remember you.
