The story opens in a Minnesota winter, where Aaron Evinrude is looking for his old girlfriend. He is attracted to someone carrying a mirrored umbrella. A friend puts him on the trail of “the bagel woman.”

Aaron hastens to a bagel shop, where the woman, Anini, tasers him. But Aaron persists. Readers might conclude that Anini would find Aaron to be a good catch; he will put up with just about anything.
