Isabella

by Stephen Ellams

Exalt love’s greatest miracle,
This goddess-given blessing,
First step towards reunion.

Breathe Gaia’s aura in.
Her broad umbilical cord
Connects us to the earth.

See the world through new-born eyes
As your baby daughter’s hand
Wraps around an opposing thumb;
Long-awaited deliverance
from emotional exile.

Behold a nonpareil beauty,
The providential offspring
Of last summer’s reckless heat,
Baptised with confluent tears
Coursing down her mother’s cheeks.

Father, plant a reassuring kiss
Upon the soft spot of her crown
Each time you send her off to sleep,
Tucked safely inside the pages
Of your revised book of dreams.
