Last Night

by Elizabeth Racz

Did you hear it last night?
My heart breaking into a million pieces
Like dropped china, it smashed to the ground
I went deaf, but did it make a sound...?
Did you wake up or keep on sleeping?

Did you see it last night?
When I fell on the floor with a deadly wound
Gasping for air, destroyed, hurt and scared, Trying to accept I won’t be spared...
Did you wake up or keep on sleeping?

Was your sleep peaceful and pleasantly light
With thoughts of someone you’ve found in the night
To charm, to hold and to love in your dreams
While I was screaming my long, silent screams?

Did you taste it last night?
The salt in my tears that wouldn’t stop falling
I cried them for us, then closed my eyes
Our lips never locked despite my tries...
Did you wake up or keep on sleeping?

Did you feel it last night?
The dying caress of unspoken feelings
My love deep inside departing with a sigh
Trying to touch you as it flew by...
Did you wake up or keep on sleeping?
You didn’t wake up; you kept on sleeping.
