Bewildering Stories introduces and welcomes...
Pat O’Malley
Pat lives in New York and enjoys writing short stories he thinks of as “absurd” or “weird.” He has published extensively.
“Godsmith” takes the form of a lecture delivered by a tour guide in a museum. The story will amuse readers by following the history of 19th- and 20th-century spiritualism up to a point in the career of a certain Samuel Dee Hoover. But this supposed spiritualist becomes a kind of electrical engineer who creates a mechanical “god.” It doesn’t work, of course, until the world is ready for it. Meanwhile, the convoluted personal circumstances surrounding the invention create a satire that will elicit an ironic smile from anyone familiar with ancient Roman deities’ family relations.
