What’s in Issue 100
Novels | Tala Bar’s Gaia ends chapter 3, “The River” with Dar and Nim making a new discovery: a peaceful-looking island. It seems almost mysteriously inviting after their hard trek downriver. Chapter 4, “The Lake” begins as a flashback to times before the catastrophe, and it puts a whole new set of characters on stage.
In part 4 of Katts and Dawgs, Roberto Sanhueza tells of Phydo and Thomm’s journey from Kattsville to Kannis, where they form an underground movement. Things go awry here in “Katt Cuts It Thin”: the idealistic Phydo discovers that he needs Thomm more than ever. |

Serials | Part I of “The Bridge” closes with an event that’s unique for a... Bridge. But fear not: euhal allen won’t leave us hanging off the end of the Bridge.
In part 4 of “The Soul Hunter,” Michael J A Tyzuk’s heroine Tamara Tomson gears for action along with her comrades. Hey, wait... this manual on the order of battle says something about “Unusual Breadth of Discretion.” Do you think we could use that? |
Short Stories |
New contributor Jörn Grote tells a gentle story about exploration. The title, “Brute Force,” is completely accurate, by the way; it’s a technical term. The ending tells us that the story is allegorical. Here’s an unofficial Challenge for our readers: decode the allegory!
New contributor Greg Hansen brings the theme of demon possession and exorcism out of the horror genre into the realm of real life in “Cross Contact.” What? The story doesn’t read that way at all? Okay, let’s talk about it. |
Poetry | Steven Utley has another “boxed set” to finish out the cycle of poetry he originally sent us. His Four Poems on Cosmic Themes are “Elemental Emotion,” “Dammit, Mars,” “Top Scientists Discern Cosmic Trend,” and “A Concise History of the Universe.” |

Challenge | Challenge 100, Double Story, picks up the conversation about “Cross Contact” with a little history and the author’s question to the readers: What might be the background of the sub-plot? |
Letters | Sandra Boshoff sends us a letter about an orphaned eagle owl. Her letter marks an important milestone in the history of Bewildering Stories.

In Times to Come
Issue 101 has some things you can count on: Tala Bar will continue Gaia; euhal allen will bring us the second part of “The Bridge”; Michael J A Tyzuk will conclude “Soul Hunter”; and Roberto Sanhueza will resolve the suspense in part 5 of Katts and Dawgs. We’ll also have other things you can count on: surprises! What are they? Now, now... let’s just say that we like to give priority to new contributors whenever possible. Is that tantalizing enough? Keep us bookmarked and keep coming back!
Readers’ reactions are always welcome.
